Guiding Values & Cultural Practice:

GUIDING VALUES

Onkwehon:we midwifery care is based on a respect for all life and birth as a profound and sacred part of life.

Onkwehon:we midwifery care will enable women to reclaim control of birth for themselves as the center of the circle of life.

Onkwehon:we midwifery will provide continuous competent care, which respects and empowers the woman regardless of her social and cultural background.  Each client has the right to design her birth plan in consultation with a midwife.

Onkwehon:we midwifery care respects the interest of women, families and communities that are best served through the coordination of parallel indigenous and western knowledge systems in the management of pregnancy and birth.

CULTURAL PRACTICE AS FOUNDATION

We rely on our Grandparents Group, a group of culturally knowledgeable Six Nations Elders for spiritual/cultural direction and guidance.  This helps ensure that our programs and services maintain a Haudenosaunee cultural foundation.  Ethical issues are also brought to this group to assist the staff with appropriate decisions regarding client or student situations.  The Elders are also available for client support.
